New permanent exhibition of the Angermünde Museum in Haus Uckermark
“Discoveries in Angermünde with Ehm Welk” is the narrative of the new permanent exhibition at Haus Uckermark in Angermünde. Ehm Welk, his work, and the regional customs and characters he passed on and made famous are the central theme of the overall concept, and his text “The Heathens of Kummerow” is one of the main inspirations for the design. Through these stories and worlds, visitors gain access to the local history and culture of Angermünde and the Uckermark region. It’s a worthwhile detour, conceived, curated, and staged by chezweitz in close collaboration with Carsten Golbeck (playwright) and Andree Volkmann (artist and illustrator), as well as Ralf Gebuhr (Director of the Angermünde Museum), and Dr. Lutz Libert (historian and ethnologist).
The result is a multimedia experience of the most loving kind: In the listed Haus Uckermark, meticulously restored, the small rooms are expanded and filled with atmosphere by Andrée Volkmann’s expansive murals. The giants are larger than life, and the pools with shivering figures performing “Heidendöppen” (heathen snuff) are seen up close – running through everything is the recurring interest in Ehm Welk’s traditional myths and the associated knowledge of the early “pagan” history of the Uckermark and its inhabitants. The many valuable auratic exhibits, finds from the region, blend into the images and complement the artistic interpretation with the real level of the objective. But nothing is more impressive and beautiful than hearing texts, and so listening takes center stage in the exhibition. Visitors are invited to make themselves comfortable in the specially designed listening niches and explore and discover the world of Martin Grambauer. Carsten Golbeck dramatized Ehm Welk’s texts especially for this exhibition and transformed them into vibrant soundscapes and stimulating audio recordings. Entire worlds now merge in a multi-sensory way through the images, exhibits, and the audio experience, all within a space of just 225 square meters.
The revitalization of what was once the city’s best address has not only created a new urban meeting place with a library, tourist information, public garden, and event spaces, but also a lively and participatory museum that bridges the gap between the history of the city of Angermünde and its surroundings, archaeological finds, and the literary oeuvre of Ehm Welk.
