50 Years A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is a milestone in film history. The British/American film influenced generations of directors, revolutionized the science fiction genre, and thrilled millions of moviegoers for decades. To mark the 50th anniversary of its première (1968), the German Film Museum in Frankfurt am Main is dedicating a unique exhibition to the production history of this cult film: “2001: 50 Years of A Space Odyssey.”
chezweitz’s design is based on the original film, attempting not only to interpret Kubrick’s ideas but also to provide insight into his work. The result is an exhibition architecture that immerses visitors directly in the cosmic space of the film, both visually and thematically. Based on an intensive analysis of the film, chezweitz developed design elements that are directly derived from the film material. The colors of Kubrick’s sets, the circular shape of HAL 9000’s red eye, and the film’s font create unique scenarios that place the extensive original exhibits and props in their historical context.
In four exhibition areas, visitors will discover Kubrick’s Space Odyssey universe as a unique cinematic space.
We are proud and excited to introduce the exhibition space “INSPIRED BY 2001” on the ground floor of the museum, which marks the beginning of the exhibition. It was designed by sixth- and seventh-semester students of the Frankfurt Academy of Communication and Design in cooperation with chezweitz, the German Film Museum, and the design studio 3deluxe.
