Museum design of the Ensemble Goethe­Wohnhaus

In an inten­sive dia­logue, a fea­si­bil­i­ty study was com­mis­sioned by the Weimar Clas­sics Foun­da­tion, which com­piled the fun­da­men­tal con­cep­tu­al and finan­cial foun­da­tions for the muse­um’s redesign: the preser­va­tion objec­tives and reg­u­la­tions of the UNESCO World Her­itage site, weighed against the require­ments of suc­cess­ful muse­um oper­a­tion. This study par­tic­u­lar­ly addressed the rapid­ly chang­ing vis­i­tor base and the desire for a broad­er and deep­er appre­ci­a­tion of Goethe’s diverse fields of thought and work.

The study presents the fun­da­men­tal con­cep­tu­al prin­ci­ples and frame­work for the archi­tec­tur­al and sceno­graph­ic redesign of the building.

The inter­ven­tions and changes were care­ful­ly dis­cussed, com­piled, and coor­di­nat­ed dur­ing the fea­si­bil­i­ty study. A group of eight cura­tors, rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the Mon­u­ment Preser­va­tion Office, and the Con­struc­tion Depart­ment of the Weimar Clas­sics Foun­da­tion par­tic­i­pat­ed. The process was also sup­port­ed by a high-cal­iber aca­d­e­m­ic advi­so­ry board.
