Queer as German Folk. 19692019 – 50 Years Stonewall Riots

Queer as German Folk. 19692019 – 50 Years Stonewall Riots

Goethe Institute New York
Traveling exhibition since May 23, 2019

Social changes are often associated with the places where they originated, such as cities, buildings, or streets. The Stonewall Inn and Christopher Street in New York City are such places that are inextricably linked to the emerging queer movement of the late 1960s. Marking and spatially visualizing its influence on Germany – East, West, and post-reunification – is the ambitious goal of the exhibition project Queer as German Folk,” organized by the Goethe Institute, the Federal Agency for Civic Education, and the Schwules Museum Berlin.

Contrary to the classic definition of scenography – designing spaces as containers for exhibits – the respective exhibition spaces of the eight Goethe Institutes in North America are designed on demand by the participants or exhibitors themselves. For this purpose, the chezweitz team designed expressive print media that can be printed and adapted to the desired location or exhibition architecture, while simultaneously being supplemented with regional exhibits. True to the motto Everyone builds everything themselves,” this scenographic approach underscores the social character of the queer revolt and the protest against the conventional and traditional.

The scenography sets the creative tone. How abstract, artistic, classical, or orderly the exhibition ultimately appears is left to each team involved in the project. Thus, each exhibition is reshaped, just as the idea ofStonewall must be continually reinvented to maintain its relevance.
