For decades, Vorarlberg’s fire departments have raced at high speed through the surrounding villages, providing assistance in times of need, both during floods and blazes. The more than 100-year history of the state fire department, with its numerous equipment, ladder trucks, and fire engines, is now presented as another part of the Vorarlberg Museum World in the lovingly restored Wollaschopf, with the scenography/staging by chezweitz.
An insight into the overall structure of the Vorarlberg Museum World. This unique museum project is supported by associations and volunteers; chezweitz, with the architectural firm Heike Schlauch — raumhochrosen, developed the structural ideas and chezweitz, in particular, the scenographic ideas. The entire space is a nocturnal world, with accompanying speed stripes on the walls and drawings of Vorarlberg houses and buildings.
The completion of the individual museums in the Museum World is largely carried out independently by the associations. It is a glimpse into a Vorarlberg panorama, into the domestic operational world of these fire engines, which themselves are placed on the ground as if on a road, complete with lane markings.
The former cotton warehouse was converted by the architectural firm Heike Schlauch — raumhochrosen so that it can now be used as a vehicle hall for vehicle presentations. chezweitz has now staged the fifty-meter-long hall as a nighttime scene. Luminous drawings of Vorarlberg buildings and houses accompany informative speed stripes on the sides, evoking a Vorarlberg panorama, the native operational environment of these fire engines. The rhythm of the supporting structures, also highlighted in luminous light, is continued, imaginarily extending the space to a film screen at the end of the room. The vehicles simulate a “fire in the roof” emergency situation – this deliberately emotional approach, with its wealth of detailed information, is intended not only to make the fascination of the vehicles tangible for visitors, but also to promote voluntary work, without which neither the fire department nor the museum world would exist.
