Watch out: Children! Protected. Loved. Threatened.

Humboldt Box Berlin
From 7 July 2017 to 14 January 2018

The relationship with children is a strong indicator of the inner bonds of social groups and cultures. Children have enjoyed special protection throughout history and on all continents. Whether it is divine powers, nutrition, education, or difficult decisions to flee, parents in particular, but also society, always take care of their offspring with an eye to the future.

For the scenographic implementation, chezweitz took a global children’s game as its starting point: playing in and with tent-like, self-constructed dwellings. Who hasn’t done that as a child? Inserting oneself into a magnificent, intimate shelter, alternating between the interior and the observation from the textile space. The exhibition design pursues the goal of appropriately linking the interior and exterior of the temporary box and transforming the functional Humboldt Box into a flowing and stimulating space. This is achieved with this extraordinary, primarily textile exhibition scenography by chezweitz. It illuminates the 160 exhibits from all over the world, from Berlin’s diverse museums, both artistically and experimentally.

In this context, the curators of the Stiftung Humboldt Forum in the Berliner Schloss have not only addressed the loving, sunny side of the topic, but have also examined the moments when concern can repeatedly turn into danger for children.
