From March 20 to August 9, 2026, the Neue Nation­al­ga­lerie Berlin, in coop­er­a­tion with the Cen­tre Pom­pi­dou Paris, presents a major solo exhi­bi­tion of the Roman­ian-French sculp­tor Con­stan­tin Bran­cusi. Fea­tur­ing over 150 works, it is the first com­pre­hen­sive ret­ro­spec­tive of the artist’s work in Ger­many in more than 50 years. The exhi­bi­tion is under the joint patron­age of Frank-Wal­ter Stein­meier, Emmanuel Macron, and Nicușor Dan.

On dis­play are major works such as ​“Sleep­ing Muse,” ​“The Kiss,” ​“Bird in Space,” and ​“End­less Col­umn.” For the first time out­side of Paris, a par­tial recon­struc­tion of Bran­cusi’s stu­dio will also be on view. The stu­dio, which the artist bequeathed to the French state in 1957 and which is now part of the Cen­tre Pom­pi­dou, is con­sid­ered key to under­stand­ing his work. As the cen­ter­piece of the exhi­bi­tion, this space presents Bran­cusi’s tools, fur­ni­ture, and art­works, as well as doc­u­ments, pho­tographs, and films that offer insights into his life and cre­ative process. Over­all, the exhi­bi­tion, with over 150 sculp­tures, pho­tographs, draw­ings, films and rare archival mate­ri­als from inter­na­tion­al col­lec­tions, offers a com­pre­hen­sive overview of the work of one of the most impor­tant sculp­tors of the 20th century.

Mies van der Rohes Architek­tur zeich­net sich durch seine kon­se­quente Geome­trie und Struk­tur aus und verza­ubert durch seine fließende Trans­parenz. Bran­cusi strebt nach dem for­malen und kün­st­lerischen Ide­al. Bei­de eint die unge­broch­ene Hal­tung zur Mod­erne. Wie ver­mit­telt die Szenografie zwis­chen zwei starken Posi­tio­nen: der des radikalen Architek­ten der Mod­erne und die des expres­siv mod­er­nen Bildhauers? 

Die sorgfältige Auseinan­der­set­zung mit den Prinzip­i­en von Mies, die grundle­gende Analyse des Deck­en- und Fuß­bo­den­rasters, Fen­sterteilun­gen und der Pro­por­tio­nen führen zur Berlin­er Ausstellung. 

In einem Spiel der präzisen Pro­por­tio­nen ent­stand eine radikal hor­i­zon­tale Ausstel­lungs­land­schaft. Kom­poniert aus schweben­den, fugen­losen Flächen in Kreis­seg­menten und Rechteck­en strebt die Ausstel­lung in die Weite des milchi­gen Berlin­er Him­mels. Exak­te Kon­tra­punk­te set­zen die ver­tikalen Ele­mente, Pavil­lons, aufgeklappte Flächen und natür­lich die präg­nan­ten Kerne und Ein­baut­en der Neuen Nation­al­ga­lerie selbst. 

Die Hor­i­zon­tal­en staffeln sich entsprechend der Dimen­sio­nen der Arbeit­en, konzen­tri­erte Innen­wel­ten im Oval der biografis­chen Werkschau wech­seln sich mit der offe­nen Präsen­ta­tion der Skulp­turen im licht­durch­fluteten Raum ab.
