Setting the course for the future 1990-2020

DB Museum Nuremberg
Since 1 April 2014

How can the complex and still-impacting contemporary history after 1989 be represented, and how can ideas, options, and paths of thought for the future be made vivid and tangible in three dimensions? With the redesign of the final section of the permanent exhibition (19902020) at the DB Museum Nuremberg, as well as the accompanying catalog, we have broken new ground architecturally, graphically, and, in particular, through the use of complex media design.

The exhibition centers on two expansive film installations: In the first room, a filing cabinet seemingly pierces the entire building with hundreds of thousands of files, visualizing the gigantic legal and administrative process of the railway reform. Surrounding this is an eight-part media installation made up of imaginary train windows, which, in a circular format, narrates the entire development of the railway from the 1990s to the present day in various films and animations in 360-degree mode. This central media installation enters into an in-depth and illustrative dialogue with the third ring of exhibits. The digital presentation is flanked by analogue exhibits that significantly reflect this period. Fine line graphics connect explanatory texts with the real exhibits and lead to the core exhibit of recent railway history: the model development of the ICE fleet. The railway has also embraced the changing world of work: in an adjoining spatial segment, imagery presents old and new working environments.

In the following strategy room, the central scenographic and architectural element is the imaginary 3D grid, a veritable spatial exhibit developed specifically for this exhibition with Eidotech GmbH. Using state-of-the-art 3D mapping technology, it provides insight into Deutsche Bahn’s strategic considerations up to 2020. Visitors can relive the events of the past 20 years through a variety of conversations in audio niches. Train drivers and CEOs report on the developments and their impressions.
