In 1911, American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay prefaced his short film Little Nemo with the injunction “Watch Me Move.” A century later, we used these words to unite the creative achievements of industry pioneers in visual effects, independent film, and contemporary art, and to explore animation’s place in global culture.
“Watch Me Move” presented animation as an influential force in the development of global visual culture, examined the relationship between animation and film, and offered a contemporary insight into the genre as a cultural phenomenon. The exhibition featured over 170 works, from iconic clips to lesser-known masterpieces, and explored the filmmaking process through puppets, set designs, storyboard drawings, wireframe visualizations, cel and background images.
